FRANKFORT AREA ANTIQUES
antiques, but they usually old and
always meaningful for me."
Linda suggests that you ask to see
the unfinished furniture area of an
antique shop where you may find trea-
sures waiting to be restored. Look for
quality wood, good workmanship and
solid construction, as well as an inter-
esting design and style that will fit
your home. Also check the signs that
the piece was handmade rather than
machine-made. And keep in mind
that the price of a piece has. a lot to do
with where you buy it.
Suzy Farbman, regional design edi-
tor for Meredith publications, also
learned how to search for antiques
from her mother and grandmother.
She collects floraline pottery, the green
pottery that was used by florists for
bouquets back in the `40s.
"The best antiquing results take
place when you specialize in one par-
ticular area and know that specialty
well," explains Farbman. "Then you
can establish levels within that group
and look for variations. It's best to dis-
play your antiques as a group. If you
don't have a flare for display, then hire
a talented interior designer to arrange
your stuff. It will be worth it. Fill up
one area and then try collecting some-
thing else. Whatever it is you're col-
lecting, it has to be right for you. It's
almost like a calling — as if what you
collect wants to belong to you."
