Peace To Israel?

the tottering Mideast peace talks, the past week has offered

of imminent breakthrough and total collapse. It all followed

yet another round of bloody violence in which frustrated Palestini-
ans attacked Israeli troops with petrol bombs, rocks and other weapons. The
Israelis responded with tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets. As casu-
alties mounted, the diplomatic _front became a dizzying flurry of activity.
Extremist voices spoke of open warfare if their wishes did not prevail. The
Oslo process, the phased plan for peacefully ending the 100-year-old conflict
between Arab and Jewish nationalism, seemed more on the brink of tragedy
or triumph than ever.
