LETTERS FACTS from page 30 THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE First, it said that both sides, the Con- gress and president of the United States, were "ardently pro-Israel." While true of Congress, the president and first lady, by the paper's own admission, are pro-Arab by favoring a "Palestinian"-Arab state in Israel. While the paper, trying to down- play its tremendous yet tragic impact by labeling it as a "gaffe," can in no way erase it. The "Palestine" genie is out of the president's bottle and Arabs cheer. Second, the editorial, despite Israel's surrender of Jewish towns with Arab res- idents in the Judea-Samarian hills, pleads for a more "civil and creative approach to be arduously pursued by all leaders." With 35 percent of Israeli terri- tory now in Arab hands and even the "Palestinian" covenant still in force (1964), could anyone have been more clever than "metropolitan" Israelis ostra- cizing "settlement" Jews? Rather than waiting until 1999 when Yassir Arafat will declare "Palestine" a state, when Jerusalem becomes a battle- ground for the capital and when Jews and Arabs really shed tears over their burial plots, Jews should recognize that Israel and its territories cannot be divid- ed as before. Only one state, Israel, can occupy the Holy Land. Either Israel, having conquered the remainder of Israel in 1967, settles, lives and defends its land or the Arabs will resort to war again to complete their "Palestine" on Israel land. Only then can the seventh mideast- ern war be avoided.
