INTRODUCING... Active women in Israel, like active women in Michigan, are looking for ways to increase involvement of others so that the local communities and orga- nizations can receive necessary assis- tance. Myth: America is principally a capi- talist system where one cares only about herself and her family. Reality: Many people in Michigan are volunteering in many ways to help their communities. There are organiza- tions that take care of people in differ- ent ways and there is a high level of commitment among young people in the community. Israelis who live on a kibbutz see commitment to others as a way of life, but the delegation did not expect to find this kind of commitment to others in Michigan. Myth: American Jews have a deep understanding about Israelis. Reality: The Israeli delegation felt that American Jews cannot see things from an Israeli perspective because Israelis have problems that affect their very existence. Even visits to Israel do not always sensitize American Jews who are not able to take into account the reality of the lives of Israelis without having lived through these experiences themselves. , In Women to Women, the partici- pants learned that they are indeed con- nected by sisterhood and by a -common history and heritage. The Israeli delega- tion in particular inspired the Michigan women-by the level of love and affection they share in spite of deep differences in political philosophy and in the varying levels of the practice of Jewish tradi- tions. The lack of tolerance and respect Jews sometimes exhibit toward other Jews was abhorrent to the Israeli women's delegation. Rather, the women in the Israeli delegation exhibited sensi- tivity and caring toward each other in spite of varied diversity of viewpoints and philosophies. At the moment, our newfound per- sonal relationships have profoundly affected us. We are looking for ways to expand our experiences and positively impact on the lives of Jews in both the Galilee and Michigan. We women hope that, in the future, the close relationships and understand- ing we developed will enable us to establish programs which will benefit both countries. Israel-American relation- ships have changed since the founding of the state 50 years ago, but programs such as Partnership 2000 are addressing this new relationship.
