elsewhere offer a message of reason
and of ahavat Yisrael
love of the
Jewish people. The Ne'eman Com-
mission did not realize its hope for a
resolution of the interdenomination-.
al conflict but did achieve something
important. Representatives of the
various streams spoke with each
other.
/\1-'- There is a great need for Jewish
groups to discuss their different
viewpoints with the goal of under-
standing the sincerity of the other,
enabling toleration of each other's
practices and building, thereby, an
atmosphere of trust.
To overcome today's extremism in
the Jewish world, moderates of all
_ the denominations should join
forces. Leaders need to seek each
other out and conduct quiet diplo-
macy to reach areas of agreement.
Together, they need to establish cen-
trist positions and take a united
and consistent stand against extrem-
ism.
As we look to the future, we
affirm our hope that Israel's society
7 ,be the finest expression of Jewish val-
ues, a society that removes terror
from human hearts and enables
each citizen to move closer to the
divine.
A Jewish state should enable
Judaism to speak in a compelling
spiritual voice to all of humankind.
There should be no contradiction
between that goal and living a reli-
IQgious Jewish life.
To achieve that strong spiritual
voice, it is necessary to encourage
a spectrum of approaches, for only
a pluralistic acceptance of different
spiritual paths can unite the Jewish
people and serve the needs of human
society in its inherent diversity. ❑
