manos Cancer Institute dinner ... held
this year in the huge Chrysler plant
where Dodge Vipers and Plymouth
Prowlers call home.
Honorary Chairman Tim Leuliette,
Penske Corp. head, wanted to do an
event different from others and it sure
was ... Something probably never
before seen in Detroit that raised well
over $1 million for cancer research
and patient assistance.
Entire motif of the affair was cen-
tered around the appearance of the
Beach Boys recording artists ... with
the vast auto plant transformed into a
huge beach-like atmosphere.
Even the sourdough rolls, with Tom
spending so much time at the baker's
/— side in Warren, were shaped to resem-
ble a surfboard.
The biggie affair and pre-gala a
week prior at the home of Tim and
Cindy were coordinated by Tom and
Diane, who have received national
notoriety as the caterers who put
together the huge party at Detroit's
Viper plant.
Some 450 employees of the
Schoenith's Roostertail Catering
worked the shindig ... Of the total,
200 volunteered their services ... In
fact, about $250,000 in donations
made up the biggest "beach party" in
Detroit's history.
Marty Kellman didn't ask for a hot
dog this time ... And wife Ceci says he
doesn't eat them anyway ... Gloria and
Bill Gilbert were thrilled with the col-
orful martini glasses folks were told to
take with them by Lee Diamond, the
gal serving martinis ... She makes the
beautiful glasses.
John Bloom is everywhere, Eleanor
and Bill Wolf are always smiling, Miri-
am and Leslie Colburn, Lili and
Howard Camden, Stuart Gorelick,
Olga and Iry Dworkin, Ann Eisen-
berg, Sally and Fred Marx, Mary Lou
and Mort Zieve, Heidi and Michael
Stein, Harriet and Sid Hiller, Barbara
and Lon Grossman ... all no doubt
shaking their heads in wonderment at
such a huge and unbelievable under-
taking.
THE COUNT IN the three weeks
following Passover was a staggering
1,100 pounds a week of whitefish sold
by Hoa Kow of West Bloomfield in
Crosswinds Mall, on Orchard Lake
Road and Lone Pine.
It has now gotten back to "normal"
at between 900 and 1,000 pounds a
week ... Very few restaurants, includ-
ing seafood houses, sell this much
whitefish.
