(ACT) Award. The show paved the
way for future series like "Ren and
Stimpy," "Tiny Toons" and "The
Simpsons."
More recently, Bakshi directed both
the live action and animation in
Paramount's Cool World (1992), fea-
turing the character Holli Would,
voiced by Kim Basinger, and two ani-
mated shorts for the Cartoon
Network's "World Premiere Cartoon"
project.
You can only wonder what he
might do with today's computers —
because Bakshi isn't going to make
animated movies any more.
"I'm a happy man. I made the films
I wanted to make," he says.
No, he just wants to paint. In fact,
Bakshi, who always treated animation
as if it were a sophisticated art form,
has his first one-man show coming up
in September in New York City.

And if you think the opening night
of a movie is hard on a director, try a
one-man art show. "I'm nervous! I'm
dying!" Bakshi wails in ragged New
Yawkeese.
Still, it is better than playing the
Hollywood toady game. "I'm happy
painting," he says. "I've no reason to
do animation. I don't get notes from
the studio when I'm painting," he
adds with another mischievous laugh.
Bakshi, by the way, laughs a lot.
Like a man who has escaped certain
death to live another day, breathe fresh
air and feel the warm sun on his face.
Which is what he does a lot at his
rural New York home, where he raised
five verP normal children.
His children all followed creative
paths into writing, teaching and
music, but none chose animation, to
Bakshi's relief.
However, an 8-year-old grandson
recently told his dad that he wanted to
become an animator, just like grand-
pa.
"I looked at him askance," says
Bakshi with a chuckle. "We all looked
at him askance."
It probably won't help. If the kid
has grandpa's genes, he'll probably
make brilliant, iconoclastic, trouble-
some animated features that critics
will love-hate, real fans will cherish
and other animators will emulate.
