need." Leave nothing to chance.

Being the Guest
You will bring a gift to your host or
send one later. It's always nice to arrive
with gift in hand, but that can back-
fire. Once I took a sumptuous bou-
quet of flowers to an old English
estate which I soon discovered had
multiple gardens, a gardener and a

to see what my hosts could use.
Flowers are usually a good choice,
however, potted plants are also nice.
A book by an author or on a subject
you know your host likes is also
good. Food items hit the spot, espe-
cially specialties of your home town
or region: a country ham from
Virginia, smoked salmon from
Washington state, salsa or sauce from
Texas, cheeses from Wisconsin, pre-
serves from anywhere. Your host
would be delighted with something
you have made yourself. If you wait
until after your visit to get a gift,
keep your ears perked for something
your host may say like, "I wish
I had a ..." or "I've been looking for
