Have a good mattress on your guest
bed, not the one you took off your
bed because it made your back hurt.
Your sofa bed is, probably grim, but, if
that's what you have, do provide an
egg carton foam pad to soften the
lumps. Also lay out two pillows for
each person, one soft and one hard, so
they have a choice, and of course blan-
kets of various weights.
Put out fresh towels and washcloths
in the bathroom if your guests have a
private bath. Lay them on the bed, if
the bathroom is shared.
It often happens that, in honor of
your guests, you break out the electric
ice cream churn or you crank up the
jacuzzi or you pull out your extra golf
clubs for the first time that season.
Make it the second time. Try these
things out several days before the visit,
giving enough time to replace the
blown fuse, buy a new filter, oil the
motor, wipe off the mildew.
I have regretted the occasion when
I omitted this step. Our daughter had
invited her fiancé getting to know us.
I planned a relaxing cookout so that a
group of good friends might meet the
young man. Just before the guests
arrived, my husband opened up the
gas grill.
At the moment a horde of wasps,
which had been nesting there unbe-
knownst to us, swarmed out of the
grill on the attack. So much for
relaxed.
The most common complaint by
guests about unsuitable accommoda-
tions has to do with pets. Do your
dogs bark frighteningly, jump up on
people or pounce on the beds? If so,
confine them out of range. And you
must be fastidious. Cat and dog hairs
must not be on the sofas and chairs,
litter boxes must not be apparent, cats
must not roam the kitchen, leaping
from counter to counter. Use a sticky
hair picker-upper several times a day
on all seats where animals sit. (I buy
mine by the case from the veterinari-
an.)
When you have welcomed the
guests warmly, show them their
accommodations. Once again, com-
munication is key. Point out the draw-
er and closet space you have reserved
