A Place to Stay

Now, where to put them. If you
have a separate room and bath for
your guests, so much the better. If you
have no such accommodation, that is
more difficult. As generous as it
sounds, don't give the guests your own
bedroom while you sleep on the
couch. It makes the guests feel guilty
and besides, you end up knocking on
the door for items you have forgotten
or, heaven forbid, sneaking into your
bedroom before dawn to retrieve some
necessity. Trust me, it doesn't work.
Once your expectations have been
communicated, make sure that what
you do give the guest is the best you
can make it.
Try out the room where you are
putting your guests. Pretend you are
arriving with suitcase in hand and
imagine what you would want or need
as the stay progressed.
A folding suitcase stand is nice.
Clear a drawer of the dresser for the
guests. Make space in the closet. (If
you haven't cleaned it out since 1989,
here's your cue.) Push back your own
garments to provide ample space on
the bar and provide nice hangers
including special ones for pants and
skirts.
Provide a telephone— be sure
your telephone number is written on
it— along with a pad of paper and
pen. Is there a comfortable chair in
the room with a good reading light
and an assortment of current maga-
zines and a best seller or two? Check
out the bedside table. Is there an
alarm clock, a box of tissues in a pret-
ty container, a small tray with bottled
water and glasses and a lamp with a
75/100 watt bulb?
Check the bathroom that your
guests are using. If the room is seldom
used, flush the toilet, let the water run
a bit, check the drain to be sure every-
thing is clear and running properly.
Put out a new toothbrush, cotton
balls, hand cream, aspirin, Band-Aids
and my personal favorite, a sticky lint
and hair picker-upper. You don't have
