LISA BRODY Special to The Jewish News O ne of my favorite parts about summer is sipping an iced tea outside at a• restaurant, watch- ing the people going by, enjoying the sun and flowers. The food seems to taste better when you eat it outside. I'm not alone. Several restaurants this summer will be catering to our whims for being outdoors. Barton Charlip, owner of Can- field's on Woodward in Detroit, will be offering patio dining in the back of his restaurant for the second sum- mer. "The customers love it because , they're outside. They've been cooped up all winter long," Charlip says. The city of Birmingham has several restaurants that offer outdoor dining. "People want to be outside when the weather is nice. It's one of the nice char- acteristics of a downtown, versus a mall," says Gail Gotthelf, director of the Birmingham Principal Shopping District. "We may see a relaxing of some of the zoning, too, to allow for more outside dining in Birmingham, perhaps even with portable decking to expand the sidewalk space."
