waterfalls and .buckets of water

Park-goers can body-surf on
three-foot-tall waves in the massive
Breakers Bay wave pool, watch
youngsters frolic with geysers,
squirt guns and other water toys in
three kiddie areas or relax at Board-
walk Patio, an adults-only oasis of
whirlpools, lounge chairs and, my
personal favorite, a swim-up bar
where TVs play music videos and

sporting events and wet money is
accepted.
It's a great place to chill out
when friends race off to defy death
on RipCord, a 2-year-old attraction
that combines elements of bungee-
jumping, skydiving and free-fall
from 15 stories.
Over the past decade, Cedar
Point has positioned itself as a
world-class resort destination, con-
tinimlly boosting its arsenal of thrill
rides and adding a range of lodging
choices to extend its appeal. Metro
Detroiters who cruised on excur-
sion steamers to the popular honey-
moon spot in the 1930s and 1940s
would barely recognize it today —
except for the historic Hotel Break-
ers, which opened in 1905 and
\
now has 420 rooms and suites.

Guests still stroll its lobby, with
baby grand piano and Tiffany
stained-glass windows, and relax on
wicker furniture in its four-tiered
rotunda with original maple floor.
A modern Breakers East wing
opened in 1995; the Breakers West
is under construction and sched-
uled to open next May
Guests seeking a bit more priva-
cy may opt to stay or dine at Sand-
castle Suites Hotel and Breakwater
Cafe at the scenic tip of the penin-
sula, a five-to-10-minute lakeside
stroll along the boardwalk from the
park.
Other Cedar Point accommoda-
tions include the Radisson Harbour
\
/-1 Inn, with frequent water taxi ser-
vice to the park; Cedar Point
Marina, with 200 overnight slips;
and Camper Village, a 200-site RV
campground.
