says Florida is the greatest place to
find antiques because it's a melting pot
from all over the world. "I'm sue that
not everything I've bought is a gen-
uine antique but they are old pieces.
And I'm using them as furniture for
the house and to accessorize. My latest
acquisition are two old wicker chairs
and a table for our patio. I'm guessing
they date somewhere in the late 20's.
Important for me is that they're well
made and look perfect."
The computer has offered another
way to shop for antiques as more col-
lectors are uncovering elusive treasures
on-line. Daily, the list of local, region-
al, state and national antique associa-
tions and shops that sell antiques are
creating their own Web sites.
Collectors now can search for these
sites on-line and either link directly to
the seller or be directed to a phone
number for information.
Some sites, such as the Maine
Antique Digest Web site, contain more
than 6,500 items illustrated and
priced, a great source for checking
auction catalog offerings as well as
special items. However handy Web
sites may be, it is obviously difficult to
check the condition of a piece.

Antique Web sites are mail-order
businesses and there are some risks.
For example, if they don't have a
return policy, think twice before send-: \ —`
ing money. Some type of plan needs
to be available if you're not happy
with your purchase. After making ini-
tial contact, it's best to contact the
person by phone so that you can ask
her to check the item over carefully
before they ship. Most dealers are rep-
utable and know their stuff and will
pack/ship the merchandise properly to —/
make you a happy customer.
The interest in antiques is wide-
spread and expanding. The good
news is that since there's no known
cure, there's no need to fight it.
Enjoy — browse the antique stores
and markets and special events as
time allows. Choose the category or
categories you want to collect and go
for it. Acquire reference material and
study so you can determine what you
want to collect; do you prefer glass,
sterling, jewelry, or fountain pens?
Remember that your budget is a
major factor.
And finally search for beauty. The
joy of living with fine antiques is
bound to give you pleasure. ❑
