"Purses are my passion," says Stone.
"I'm intrigued by old purses and the
stories they hold. I have a couple of
people that help repair them and make
straps for the purses and then I sell
them at these parties plus I have small
boutiques at places like Gayle's Nails
in Franklin and at Wanda's Perfect
Stitch. I've branched out into com-
pacts and a few other odds and ends
but it's primarily purses — leather
tooled, mesh, petit point and tapestry."
Both Fenton and Stone agree that
if you follow the advice of experts,
you can become a savvy buyer; it just
takes a little research. To answer your
questions, there are books about
everything and the more knowledge-
able you are as a buyer, the more
happy you'll be with your purchase.
"No matter how many books you
read," says Fenton, "the best way to
learn is to go to antique shops, shows
and auctions and ask questions. And
even if you think you know what a
piece is worth, remember to bargain."
The consensus is that listening is
learning, whether you're in northern
Michigan or just south of London,
England.
Marsha and Henry Gordon of
Birmingham collect certain types of
old furniture, Baccarat crystal, old
brass zodiac boxes and are always
looking out for items to accessorize
their home. Weekends will find them
at DuMouchelle auctions or estate
sales. Marsha often antiques in New
York when she visits her daughter
and visiting the flea markets in
Europe is a must for the couple
when they travel. One of their most ±\
prized finds is a Pullman car's meat
trolley once found on the very plush
European trains.
"We buy our treasures because we
think they'll look good in our home
and we enjoy them," explains Henry.
"If they increase in value, that's a
bonus, but it's never our primary pur-
pose. We've learned not to get too
invested in a piece and getting it at a —\
particular price. If we like it and can
come to an agreement about a price
we can afford, great. If not, we walk
away knowing we gave it our best
because there's no negotiation when
you're desperate."
