I- Congregation Shaarey Zedek wishes a MazelTov to our Hebrew High School graduates of 1998! 0/ A\ 0 which to campaign," said committee member Irwin Elson. "We need to make sure that we have enough Belt in the pot to put on an event as high-qual- ity as 1990, if not better. "We can't afford to lose money because we won't be bailed out if we do." According to committee member Norm Pappas, contributions don't have to be only financial. Some 1,300 host families and 1,000 volunteers will be needed to make the Games a suc- cess. "It's hard to say when the big run on homes may come," said housing com- mittee co-chair Maddee Adelson. "Peo- ple think that this event happens in Detroit every couple of years, so they say they'll do it next time. I don't see it happening here again for at least anoth- er decade." According to Adelson, the host fami- ly provides its athletes breakfast and din- ner, and gets them to and from desig- nated neighborhood Maccabi bus stops. "We also give all the hosts a list of who else is housing in their area so they can carpool," Adelson said. "A lot think they shouldn't do it if they work, but it's flexible for working couples." The most time the host families are likely to spend with the athletes will be on Friday evening and Saturday. No athletic events will take place during Shabbat. Athletes also will be housed in Ann Arbor, and bussed to West Bloomfield daily from a central locale. Sharon New- man is hoping to find at least 50 Ann Arbor homes for visiting athletes. During phone-a-thons, local resi- dents also are asked if they are willing to volunteer their time. "Jobs" range from serving meals at the JCC to helping at athletic venues and evening social activi- ties. Kellman's father, Jay Robinson, was one of the key figures in the growth of the Maccabi Games, both locally and nationally. Robinson died April 10, but his Maccabi ideals are firmly entrenched in his daughter. "My dad's feeling was if Jewish kids get together for a Jewish event, they will talk about their common Jewish experi- ences," said Kellman. "But it was also his feeling that it was 100 percent seri- ous athletics between the lines." : :: ., " " 41%°8 1111.1111111.4 maw % JESSICA GARTNER STEPHEN GOUTMAN JENNIFER LEVINE DAVID MOSES REBECCA PARZEN DAVID ROCHKIND DAVID ROSEN HENRY ROSENBAUM DANIEL BARAK ELIZABETH BERESH KENNETH BIRNHOLI Z DAVID BORDOLEY SHOSHANNA COHEN JENNY COHN KIM DORFMAN LEAH FINK STEVAN ROSEN BERG STEPHANIE RUBIN EMILY SCHILLER TAMAR SCHILLER JONATHAN SERMAN SCOTT SHAPIRO RACHELWRIGHT Congregation Shaarey Zedek CSZ-B'nai Israel Center 4200Walnut Lake Road West Bloomfield, MI 48323 (248) 68 I -4287 Congregation Shaarey Zedek 27375 Bell Road Southfield, MI 48034 (248) 357-5544 Eugene & Marcia Applebaum Jewish Parenting Center ,, 4200Walnut Lake Road West Bloomfield, MI 48323 (248) 681-5353 Irving & Beverly Laker Education &Youth Complex 2075 Walnut Lake Road West Bloomfield, MI 48323 (248) 539-4673 ey,ileic e., aft94-e-943-eia //,\\•••,..... 47-ifilitz.1 a- itzeith, ti' L944443- I 0 . .•. *. : a s s fillilil0 • wow ' Maze/ ° Cave tr7 five , to .. g. 0 eaft-14.6 444444-fthti- eig2o 9/1998 • Julie Levin Brooke Lipman Julie Magar Jamie Parr Gabriel Podolsky Jamie Rosen Jennifer Rosenthal Erika Rubinstein Mychal Harris Ann Hazan Jeremy Heuer Melanie Jonas Steven Katz Shira Klein Ari Konheim Sam Lasser David Adler Laya Barak Jake Cohen Jacqueline Craig Alyse Erman Daniel Freeman Rebecca Goodman Julie Goutman Julie Schiller Karen Schwartz Marissa Shuback Carly Siskind David Soberman MelissaTaub Adam Wright Congregation Shaarey Zedek ❑ CSZ-B'nai Israel Center 4200 Walnut Lake Road West Bloomfield, MI 48323 (248) 68 I -8247 Congregation Shaarey Zedek 27375 Bell Road Southfield, MI 48034 (248) 357-5544 Five-hundred homes still are need- ed for visiting athletes.
