eep in a corner of the first
floor of the Kahn Jewish
Community Center lies the
headquarters of the 1998
JCC Maccabi Games. At this point in
the 20-month preparations, it's rarely a
quiet place.
Delegations from all over the world
are sending their team lists, phone-a-
thons are recruiting housing for more
than 2,800 visiting teen athletes, and
the home teams are starting to practice
for the Aug. 16-23 event that will have
more participants (over 3,300 total)
than the Winter Olympics in Nagano,
Japan.
And that's just for starters.
It will cost the JCC an estimated
$1.25 million to host the biennial
international event. The operations
committee is charged with setting up
airport arrivals for at least 1,000
athletes on Aug. 16, having bus
routes drawn up to move the nearly
4,000 athletes and coaches to sport-
ing events and evening activities,
and finding 1,300 homes for the vis-
itors.
