Celebrate Israel's birthday with the
words and melodies of music 2 p.m.
Sunday, May 17, at the JPM. The
Temple Kol Ami choir, under the
direction of Nathalie Conrad, will per-

Cafe Europa will be 12:45 p.m.
Monday, May 18, at the Jewish Com-
munity Center in Oak Park. This
monthly program sponsored by Sinai
Hospital and the Jewish Community
Center is for Holocaust survivors.
Donations will be accepted.
Enjoy Yiddish, Russian and English
melodies with entertainer Ben Open-
gayn on the keyboard 1 p.m. Thurs-
day, May 21. The afternoon is spon-
sored by the Charles and Frances
Driker Yiddish Culture Fund. There is
no charge.
Adult art classes, instructed by Har-
riet Gelfond, are held every Monday,
Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to
noon. This is a beginning class using
various media. There is a charge which
includes art supplies.
The Wednesday Afternoon Social is
at 1 p.m. weekdays. Broadway show
tunes and Yiddish melodies are pre-
sented by a troupe of local entertain-
ers. Refreshments are served. There is
a nominal charge.
A weekly Erev Shabbat program
with Cantor David Gutman takes
place on Fridays at 12:45 p.m. •

On Mikvah

Community educator Ruth Bergman
will lead a study session titled
"Ancient Waters, Modern Women: A
\--_,ontemporary Look at Mikvah" 1:30
p.m. Sunday, May 17, at the Women's
League for Conservative Judaism
Spring Conference, hosted by Congre-
gation Beth Achim.
There is no charge. A tour of the
Beth Achim Mikvah will be offered.

Centennial JAW

Centennial chapter Jewish Women
International will hold its Celebration
Dinner 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, at
Meriwether's, 25485 Telegraph Road,
Southfield.
The event will pay tribute to Cen-

tennial's past presidents over the last
40 years. There is a $20 charge for
dinner.

Dr. Zornberg
Slates Talk

Dr. Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg, noted
lecturer, teacher and author, will speak
on "Through The Looking Glass:
Women in the Exodus Narrative" at
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Young
Israel of Southfield, 27705 Lahser
Road. -
Dr. Zornberg, originally from Glas-
gow, taught at Gateshead Seminary in
England. She is the author of Genesis:
The Beginning of Desire, which won
the 1995 National Jewish Book Award
and has appeared on the PBS series
"Genesis: A Living Conversation." Dr.
Zornberg teaches weekly Torah classes
in Jerusalem. The lecture is free.
