His project includes text, sound, and video clips of live interviews with two Detroit residents who talked about their childhood as Jews in Russia at the turn of the century. Shelby Kaufman,. an eighth-grader at Abbott Middle School in West Bloomfield, has made achieve- ments in writing and drama. Her short story "Camp Tragedy" won a silver award in the National Scholastic Writing Competition. Shelby also earned Shelby Kaufman a third place hon- orable mention in the Detroit Free Press Writing Competition and third place in the "America and Me" essay competition. She was a school finalist in the Optimist Oratorical competi- tion as well. Her recent duo dramatic interpretation of "Beaches" earned her a seventh-place plaque at the Region- al Forensics Competition held in Ann Arbor. Shelby is the daughter of Nancy and Joel Kaufman. Mike Beresh of Southfield received an honor from the Southfield Communi- ty Foundation for his volunteer ser- vices for the past 24 years in numer- ous civic and community causes. Kal Nanes, son of Harry and Susan Nanes and a junior at Groves High School, was one of only two college-bound stu- dents in Michigan and 14 in the United States to achieve a 36, the highest possible composite score Kal Nanes on the administra- tion of the ACT Assessment. Eilu v' Eilu Talks Set Eilu v' Eilu, the joint adult Jewish learning project will present the third and final session in its spring adult learning series, "How Good is 'Good Enough'? A Jewish Look at Parent- ing," featuring Rabbi Aaron and Ruth Bergman 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Hillel Day School. The session is titled "From Dr. Spock to Dr. Ruth: How to Talk to Your Child About Difficult Issues." Tuition is $7 ($5 for Eilu v' Eilu members). All are welcome to attend. "Our Bubbes, Our Selves: Chap- ters in the History of American Jew- ish Women," an adult Jewish learning series sponsored by Eilu v' Eilu and hosted by Hillel Day School, will continue 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, with a lecture titled "American Jewish Women as Politicians and Rebels at the Turn of the Century." The instructor for the series is Seth Kore- litz, candidate in Jewish history at Brandeis University. Tuition is $7 per session ($5 for members of the spon- soring organizations). Students may register at the door. Local Men Take Office The Great Lakes Region of the Feder- ation of Jewish Men's Clubs recently held its annual convention. Local representatives elected were David Goldis from Congregation Beth Achim as executive vice president and Jeffrey Supowit from Adat Shalom Synagogue as treasurer. Richard Racusin from Congregation Beth Shalom had previously been elected as chairman of the Michigan Sub- Region. SZ Enrolls Nursery Classes Shaarey Zedek Beth Hayeled Nursery will offer parent-toddler classes for children 15-30 months at the West Bloomfield and Southfield campuses in the fall of 1998.
