GENERAL MOTORS
LOYALTY FIRST REWARD

Messianic Jews supported by the Bap-
tists is another element of the continu-
ing challenges. And let us not forget
that every year between 1,000-2,000
anti-Semitic incidents are reported,
not to mention those that go unre-
ported.
Finally, the most recent national
\---)urvey on anti-Semitism, conducted
several years ago by ADL, indicated
that 20 percent of Americans still har-
bor significant anti-Semitic attitudes.
None of which is to ignore the
tremendous progress that has been
made over the years. It is only to sug-
gest that American Jewish perspectives
be based on American Jewish realities.
The AJC's findings point out how
• we should approach the dual issues of
intermarriage and anti-Semitism. It is
not one or the other — the processes
go on simultaneously.
One has to improve Jewish identity
not because anti-Semitism has disap-
peared but because we are several gen-
erations away from the immigrant
experience and Jewish continuity
\ requires special efforts. We must con-
/---rinue to maintain our vigilance on
matters affecting Jewish security —
keep the extremists at bay, make sure
the mainstreaming of anti-Semitism is
constrained, ensure that the funda-
mental liberties in society at large are
protected and educate Americans of all
backgrounds to reduce prejudice. It is
a full agenda and a relevant one.

SEDAN DeVILLE

The Palestinian Arabs, as well as
the neighboring Arab states, believe
that Jews have no right to settle any-
where in the area. To them, all of
Israel is illegitimate occupation.
Beginning with Israel's War of Inde-
pendence, they tried to rectify their
concept of an egregious wrong of
Israel's existence by means of war.
The efforts of Palestinians (i.e.
Arabs) under the leadership of Yassir
Arafat have been directed to a piece-
meal approach. Little by little, a con-
/—ference here and a meeting there,
Israel had to make concessions, often
without any quid pro quo. Even
when the Arabs agreed to some con-
cessions on their part, they evidently
did not feel that compliance was
called for.
