kids could follow Rosh Hashanah ser- vices, and that made it much more meaningful for me as well." Wittman grew up secular and likes Goldstein's spiritual approach. "This is Esther's life." Laura Huebner sends her children to Hebrew Day School, but likes them to get extra study of the Torah portion at TEE "They don't just learn Torah there. They learn how to incorporate it into everyday life," she said. Although Goldstein is more reli- giously observant than most of her students, parents say she does not pressure them to become Orthodox. Caryn Shapiro, who sends her kindergarten-age daughter to Hebrew Day School and TEP, said, "Esther and her family are very accepting of where people are in their lives. I don't feel like they're proselytizing." Goldstein said she wants merely to give children a solid education and make them enjoy Judaism. "I never tell people what to do as far as observance unless they ask," she said. "I can't give you credit for keeping things or fine you for not. It's between you and God." Philosophical differences do arise at times, but aren't divisive. "Esther has her own point of view and is quite open, but she doesn't insist on our acceptance of it," said Wittman, whose son will celebrate his bar mitz- vah next year, not at Chabad House, but at Beth Israel. "Esther has been supportive of that and I'm sure she'll come to his bar mitzvah." For Shapiro, differences emerge on the role of women in Judaism, although she is delighted with her daughter's education at TEE "Philosophically, I'm not sure that girls should not be on the bimah, and until I figure that one out, I'm Conservative," she said. Dov Goldberg, who has served as director of education at Beth Israel Congregation since September, does not feel threatened by several members sending their children to TEP instead of his afternoon school. "Despite the fact that we try to treat each child as an individual, I don't think any single institution is necessari- ly right for every family," he said. "I do wish, though, that we were offering whatever these families are looking for." Goldstein hopes to expand the pro- gram and add new classrooms. In addition, she recently started a month- ly bat mitzvah club for 10 girls, and 50 children have signed up so far for a Chabad day camp, which opens for the first time this summer. ❑ YOU'LL BE INTRIGUED, INFORMED, INSPIRED, INVIGORATED, INCENSED, INTIMIDATED AND NOW...
