had no problem with job opportuni-

The college was founded in 1994
with a charter donated by West
Bloomfield philanthropist Norman
Allan. According to Rabbi Kagan,
charters — state permits to open
institutions of higher learning — are
rarely issued new, but old ones can be
bought and sold. "If you wanted to
start from scratch without a charter,
you'd probably never be able to do it,"
he said. "But if a college goes defunct
and you have the charter, it's a very

MJI provides career training in
what its brochure describes as a
warm, Jewish atmosphere." Although
the institution is co-educational, class-
es are single-sex, and the Talmud
classes are available only to men.
Enrollment is open to non-Jews,
but so far none has applied. Although
sponsored by the Lubavitch
Foundation, MJI, according to its cat-
alog, "operates independently under
the auspices of its board of trustees."
Among the companies that have
hired MJI graduates for computer-
related posts are E&E Manufacturing

Detroit and Compuware in
Farmington Hills. Of the 20 gradu-

computing fields, said Dr. Kagan.
"I learned a lot because of the
small classes, personalized attention
and atmosphere and am still close to
the teachers," said Chaya Kagan,
niece of David and Yitzchak Kagan
