Associates, which runs an assisted-liv-
ing facility in Kalamazoo. While Elan
Village - is private, they entered into a
"preferred provider" agreement with
Federation which obligates them to set
aside 10 percent of the 78 beds for
lower-income residents.
Fink, a social worker who also hosts
a radio show in Kalamazoo on issues
that affect older adults, noted that
assisted living has a "philosophy of
care" which embraces the notion of
resident independence and the "digni-
ty of risk" that asserts the right of resi-
dents to make decisions about their
care. Psychological well-being is fun-
damental in the way these facilities
treat residents.
"Another aspect of assisted living is
removing the institutional trappings,"
Fink said.
Near Elan Village are other assisted-
living facilities, including Trowbridge,
Heatherwood and McDonnell Tower.

three meals daily, range from $1,375
(or lower, depending on a person's
ability to pay) to $1,975. Elan offers
private and semi-private rooms with
