A new kosher assisted-living facility
opens in Southfield.

A

manor has become a village.
The turnaround is dra-
matic. Gone are the institu-
tional remnants of Elan
Village's predecessor, Prentis Manor
nursing home — its hospital beds, dis-
infectant and white nursing uniforms.
Today, the 35,000-square-foot building
at the corner of Lahser Road and Civic
Center Drive has been transformed
into a homey assisted-living facility,
replete with kosher kitchen.

Elan Village opened in early April
after new owners John Hamburger
and Dick Fink performed a makeover
on Prentis, the last nursing home
operated by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit. They re-carpet-
ed and re-painted the place, added
sconces and wallpaper borders, a
beauty salon, activities room and
"hospitality desks." A 12-bed unit for
people with dementia-related disor-
ders features its own dining room and
tactile art works.
