expands air passages.
"This therapy isn't used very often
anymore because it is uncomfortable
and takes recovery time, although it
can work best for selected cases," says
Dr. Arthur Rosner, Beaumont Hospi-
tal otolaryngologist. "Another alterna-
tive is laser assisted uvula palatoplasty
(LAUP). The patient has the proce-
dure done as an out-patient and the
surgery itself is less invasive and less
painful.
"Each session takes about 10 min-
utes and the full treatment is spread
over three to five sessions. The multi-
ple sessions keep the pain down to a
mild sore throat for a few days and
there's no bleeding."
Dr. Rosner described a one-step
laser treatment in which a CO2 laser
is used to remove the uvula and trim
the soft palate. Patients generally
experience a sore throat while eating
for a week or more but their speaking
is not affected. Snoring is eliminated
or significantly reduced.
A newer, minimally invasive tech-
nique to stop snoring uses radio fre-
quency energy. The energy is directed
through an electrode to reduce and
tighten excess soft tissue and retract
the uvula. By heating and coagulating
the tissue from the inside out, the
procedure can remove obstructive tis-
sue with less pain and it takes less
time to heal than either laser surgery
or the traditional UPPP.
Called somnoplasty, Dr. Rosner is
one of the first physicians in the
Detroit area to perform the proce-
dure.
The problem with this procedure
and others is that snoring is not con-
sidered life threatening and is not
covered by insurance.
Whatever your physical condition,
if repeated wakening during the
night, or excessive sleepiness during
the day describe your lifestyle, it's
time to get your .Z.ZZZZS checked out
by a physician. ❑
