To round things out, Universal Home Video's one Godzilla title, King Kong vs. Godzilla, is being released, too. Toho and Universal also hoped to unite Godzilla and Frankenstein, but that classic never made it to the screen. Godzilla academics argue over the details of the Godzilla films. Did Godzilla really die in the original? If so, who is the Godzilla in the sequels? And if there is a- Godzilla Jr., is Godzilla a he or a she? In 1995, Toho Studios made their last "official" entry in the "Godzilla" saga, Godzilla vs. Destroyer. This left the market open for Columbia/TriStar to make their uber-Godzilla for a worldwide mass audience. But can the Hollywood-ized Godzilla — who's headed to New York in this version by the makers of the blockbuster Independence Day — measure up to the unabashed campy charm of Toho's darling dinosaur? There is something to celebrate in Toho's cheap special effects, an appeal that shouldn't be overlooked. Even though Godzilla has gone Hollywood, Toho is said to be working on a new adventure featuring King Ghidorah, the three-headed monster. Here's a look at Godzilla on home video: • Godzilla, King of the Monsters, starring Inoshiro Honda, Raymond Burr and Takashi Shimura. Directed by Inoshiro Honda and Terry Morse. 1956 (Simitar Entertainment, 80 min- utes). Available on DVD. Originally called Gojira in Japan. A series of hydrogen bomb tests awaken a giant, dinosaur-like monster. A cranky Godzilla comes to mainland Japan to breathe fire and destroy everything in his path. Burr and a Japanese scientist battle the monster. • Godzilla vs. Mothra, starring Akira Takarada, Hiroshi Koizumi and Yuriko Hoshi. Directed by Inoshiro Honda. 1964 (Simitar Entertainment, 106 minutes). Available on DVD. In Mosura tai Gojira, as it was called in Japan, two miniature women are taken off Infant Island as a sideshow attraction. This unleashes the vengeance of the giant moth, Mothra. Godzilla gallantly steps in to save the day. • Godzilla vs. Monster Zero, star- ring Nick Adams, Akira Takarada and Yoshio Tsuchiya. Directed by Inoshiro Honda. 1966 (Simitar Entertainment, Gilda Meets coma General Motors presents the movie premiere of Godzilla, starring Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, Hank Azaria and Maria Pitillo, in a benefit for Gilda's Club Metro Detroit at the Star Southfield Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, May 20. The event begins with refresh- ments at 6 p.m., followed by the movie at 7:30 p.m. $25. 25333 W. 12 Mile Road, Southfield. (248) 577-0800. 108 minutes). Available on DVD. Aliens plan to take over Earth by using Godzilla, Rodan (a giant ptero- dactyl) and King Ghidrah. • Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, starring Masaaki Daimon, Kazuya Aoyama and Reiko Tajima. Directed by Jun Fukuda. 1974 (Anchor Bay Home Video, 84 minutes). When Godzilla's egg is stolen by scientists, Godzilla and Rodan want it back. But the scientists have developed Mechagodzilla, a heavy-artillery cre- ation of Godzilla. Don't they know that nothing beats the real thing? • Godzilla 1985, starring Raymond Burr, Keiju Kobayashi and R.J. Kizer. Directed by Kohji Hashimoto and R.J. Kizer. 1985 (Anchor Bay Home Video, 91 minutes). Thirty years after the first Godzilla movie, Burr is back to fight again. When Godzilla arrives in Japan, he finds that technology has changed and a superjet has been developed to attack him. • King Kong vs. Godzilla, starring Tadao Takashima, Mie Hama and Akiko Wakabayashi. Directed by Inoshiro Honda and Thomas Montgomery. 1963 (Universal Home Video, 91 minutes). An industrialist brings King Kong to Japan to promote giant berries from Kong's Farou Island. At the same time, a glacier that has trapped Godzilla breaks open, and Godzilla and Kong have the biggest heavyweight fight ever. • Son of Godzilla, starring Tadao Takashima, Akira Kubo and Akihiko Hirata. Directed by Jun Fukuda. 1967 (Anchor Bay Home Video, 86 minutes). When scientists start to experi- ment with the weather, Godzilla's son, Minya, is threatened. Being a good parent, Godzilla goes on the rampage. ❑
