Forum Hosts
Everest Climber

Town Meeting
On Spirituality

Businessman and mountain climbing
enthusiast Louis Kasischke will be the
guest speaker at the next Federation
Forum noon-1:30 p.m. Thursday,
June 4, at the Townsend Hotel, Birm-
ingham.
The Federation Forum is spon-
sored by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit to promote an
interest in Federation activities and
enlighten its participants on impor-
tant political, economic and social
issues. .
Mr. Kasischke's topic will be "Judg-
ment Day on Everest." He has
climbed most of the classic mountains
in the world. In 1996, Mr. Kasischke
survived the worst disaster in Mt.
Everest history, when eight of his fel-
low climbers died.
Admission fee is $25 per person.
Dairy lunch will be served, with
kosher meals provided on request with
payment. Required reservations are
due by May 28.

There will be a town meeting on Jew-
ish spirituality at 7:30 p.m. on three
evenings at the Kahn Jewish Commu-
nity Center.
On Monday, May 11, Joel Lurie
Grishaver will speak on "The Nature
of the Soul." On Tuesday, May 19,
Rabbi Daniel Gordis will speak on
"And God Was Not in the Fire." On
Wednesday, May 27, a rabbinic panel
will respond.

Vilna Jewry
Subject of Talk

Gabriel Weinreich, professor emeritus
of physics, University of Michigan,
will speak 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 3,
at the Frieze Building in Ann Arbor.
Dr. Weinreich will discuss how the
self-identification as Jews of Vilna
Jewry was overwhelming and unques-
tioned.

LZA Plans
For Convention

Sol Drachler and Mel Seidman have
been named local chairs of the nation-
al Labor Zionist Alliance (LZA),
which will hold its convention in met-
ropolitan Detroit June 5-8.
The triennial meetings will be held
in the Detroit area for the first time in
30 years and will include delegates from
around the United States. Most events
on the program will be held at the
Southfield Westin Hotel. The extended
weekend includes sessions on America-
Israeli relations, formal convention pro-
ceedings and a community forum on
the American and Israeli scenes.
Reconstructionist Shabbat services,
led by Congregation T'chiyah, will be
held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at
the Westin. Entertainment will
include klezmer music by Dr. Neil
Alexander, the founder of Klezmer
Fusion.
Registration fee for non-delegates is
$100, which includes participation in
the proceedings, two breakfasts, one
lunch and the convention materials.
