Independence Day
celebrations are over, but
in typical Israeli style,
the controversy is not.

LARRY DERFNER
Israel Correspondent

I is been a long, rough 50th
birthday for Israel, and while
the date itself has passed, it's not
over yet.
Before Independence Day, the main
topic of conversation was how disorga-
nized the preparations had been, how
many chairmen and impressarios had
quit in frustration. Now what sticks in
people's throats is the religious pres-
sure that led the Batsheva Dance Co.
to cancel its performance at the
"Jubilee Bells" show, the centerpiece
event of the celebrations.
In fact, "culture war" is the term
being used repeatedly by artists,

and blouses in a symbolic demonstra-
tion of freedom — in this case the free-
dom to strip, a freedom the Batsheva
modern dancers had been denied.
At the final rehearsal prior to the
show, staged at Jerusalem's Givat Ram
Stadium, a few religious people in the
audience were outraged when they saw
Batsheva performing a scene from
their dance "Anaphase," in which they 1
strip down to body shirts and short
shorts while singing, "One is our
Lord, in heaven and on earth," from
the Passover Haggadah prayer song,
"Who Knows One?"
Religious politicians from the
National Religious Party, Shas and
United Torah Judaism demanded that
the segment be altered or taken out.
Shas threatened to bring down the
government.
Doron Shmueli, head of the 50th
anniversary organizing committee, and
Moshe Leon, director-general of the
Prime Minister's Office, pressured
Batsheva to tone down the scene.

ers.
The day after the show, about 300
Israeli entertainers lay in wait at Tel
Aviv's Beit Hatfusot museum for the
visit of National Religious Party cabi-
net ministers Yitzhak Levy (Education
and Culture) and Shaul Yahalom
(Transportation.)
"Dirty Jew!" some of the protesters
yelled. "Fascist!" "Khomeini!" A few of
the entertainers took off their shirts

President Ezer Weizman suggested
that the troupe strip down only to
long underwear.
In the end, the dancers decided not
to go on. In front of Netanyahu,
Weizman, guest of honor U.S. Vice
President Al Gore and a huge TV
audience, co-producer Oded Kotler
mounted the stage and announced
that Batsheva would not be appearing.
The responses were biting. The
