QUEST from page 31
with a "prophetic vision to offer us
what reality can be."
In introducing Rabbi Roman, Tem-
ple Kol Ami trustee Andrea Liberman
said: "His commitment to all religious
communities is genuine and complete."
The Rev. Lyons' son, David, had
high praise for the trio of award win-
ners: "They are truly, truly giants
amongst us."
From the podium, Rabbi Roman
said he would accept his Dove Award
"with a condition â that the work
and study of the Ecumenic a l Institute
will continue."
To which Lobenthal, the Institute's
interim executive director, responded
in his remarks: "I'm here to say, sym-
bolically, that Jim's dream, and our
dream, will continue. The Institute
will have a tomorrow."
In a moving benediction, Rabbi
Irwin Groner of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek reminisced about Lyons,
"whose benevolent spirit has touched
all of us â whose spirit endures."
Recounting how Lyons looked
upon dialogue as a key to understand-
ing and acceptance, Groner said: "We
must talk to each other and listen to
each other, if we are to learn."
He asked all to open their eyes, "to
treasure one another."
He ended with a plea for everyone
to honor Lyons' memory by "offering
hope where there is despair and bring-
ing love where there is hatred." -
Rabbi Groner's heartfelt comments
stirred thoughts of what Lyons wrote
in his goodbye shortly before his
death: "It is in the positive thrust of
loving relationships that life becomes
creative and exciting."
