Israel Defense Forces Major Yair Barkat, assistant defense and armed forces
attache in Washington, gives the Order of the Day.

osh Berkovitz's eyes brimmed with tears throughout the Yom
Hazikaron tribute at Congregation Shaarey Zedek April 29.
As president of the Michigan Friends of the Israel Defense
Forces and chairman of the event, Berkovitz was glad to be
among a crowd of over 850 who came to hear prayer and song for
Israel's Memorial Day.
"I cannot say it was a beautiful event, but it was a very touching
event. People went home really thinking about those wonderful young
soldiers that gave their lives so we will have a free state," Berkovitz said.
The tribute to the 18,000 men and women who have given their
lives in defense of Israel featured poetry readings, singing by Cantors
Chaim Najman and Howard Glantz, with accompaniment of harpists,
flutists and pianists, and a speech by Israel Defense Forces Major Yair
Barkat. The national anthems of the United States and Israel were played.
Berkovitz doesn't believe the Jewish community has ever mounted
such a stunning tribute for Yom Hazikaron.
"I think it's going to be a tradition from now on," he said. El
