Joel Adelman takes the top spot at Honig-man Miller.
hospitals and health care providers,
including the Sisters of Mercy Health
Corporation.
But when Adelman becomes CEO,
will that added responsibility mean he
has to put aside his practice?
"My level of practice will decline,
the amount of time that I spend prac-
ticing law will decline. The amount of
time I spend in law firm activities will
increase," he said.
Adelman believes one of the differ-
ences between being CEO in a law
firm as opposed to a public corpora-
tion is that things are much less struc-
tured.
Said Adelman, "In major corpora-
tions there's a hierarchy. The share-
holders are absentee owners, and their
only contact with the chairman is if
they attend an annual meeting once a
year. And 90 to 95 percent of the peo-
ple don't (attend) and thus have no
contact with the chairman.
"Here, the owners are all lawyers.
They all work here. And if you're the
CEO, your owners are right down the
hall, and they're your colleagues.
You're a lawyer, and they're lawyers.
These are all people I've worked with
for years.
"You practice together, so you have
more of a horizontal than a vertical
structure. They give advice freely, and
that's different from shareholders in a
corporation," said Adelman.
Another difference may be that in
law firms, decisions are more often
made on a consensus basis than in
business.
Adelman believes that the job of
CEO is defined in terms of things that
are important to the person occupying
the role. In that context, he feels the
most important job of the CEO at
Honigman Miller is to constantly reaf-
firm and communicate the core values
of the law firm, and to constantly
evaluate the important actions they
take and measure them against that
standard.
"We believe that we hire the best
lawyers," said Adelman. "It is very
hard to get a job here. Scholastic
requirements are high, and we want to
.be certain it stays that way.
"Somebody needs to orchestrate the
activities of all the people here, to
make sure we're all rolling in the same
direction. There has to be somebody
who initiates and obtains a consensus
for new initiatives, that sees the need
to make changes, take particular
courses of action, and gets people to
either buy in, agree, or indicate a good
reason why those courses of action
shouldn't be taken, so that we can
move forward in a collective fashion.
"People come up with ideas, but
someone has to coordinate it, to move
it forward," said Adelman.
Born in Detroit in 1939, Adelman
graduated from Mumford High
School in 1957. He majored in eco-
nomics at the University of Michigan.
After graduating in 1961, Adelman
went into the family business, Marine
Foods Corp., the food processors
known for their Happy Herring brand
of pickled herring. His parents, Albert
and Eve, have been married since
1934. Both are 87, and live in Boca
Raton, Fla.
But Joel Adelman always wanted to
