standards of ethical and moral behav-
ior. A synagogue is a Bet Knesset
(House of Assembly), a Bet TFillah
(House of Prayer) and a Bet Midrash
(House of Study). If our synagogue's
spiritual leaders fail to live up to our
Jewish ethical and moral precepts by
example, to whom shall we and our
children look for such guidance?"
In his letter to the congregation,
Lonnerstater also wrote: "We realize
that it may be difficult to find a cantor
as talented as Cantor Lanxner, but
every effort to hire a cantor who will
make us proud will be made."
Lanxner declined to be interviewed.

The BAHM
board voted to
rescind Lanxner's
contract renewal.

BAHM Executive Director Elliot
Burns estimated that 115 children are
enrolled in the religious school and
said 573 families belong to the syna-
gogue.
If the board does not reverse its deci-
sion on Lanxner's contract, BAHM will
be among a handful of Detroit-area
synagogues in search of an education
director. Congregation B'nai Moshe,
Temple Kol Ami and Temple Beth El
also are looking for people to run their
religious schools. ❑
