WARS
from page 94
LEBANON
Background:
The Camp David Accords
between Egypt and Israel, signed
in 1979, signified better relations
between Israel and its Arab
neighbors. But along the north-
ern border, the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization (PLO) —
headquartered in Beirut — was
launching terrorist and rocket
attacks on Israeli settlements.
Israel Defense Minister Ariel
Sharon began talking openly
about "cleaning up Lebanon"-by
kicking out the PLO and placing
Beirut — decimated from the
Lebanese Civil War — in the
hands of the Lebanese Christians.
The war:
On June 6, 1982, 80,000 Israeli
soldiers crossed into southern
Lebanon, easily pushing to the
outskirts of Beirut. PLO guerril-
las disappeared into Muslim West
Beirut. Israel was unwilling to
invade the capital, so a stalemate
set in, one punctuated by Israeli
shellfire into the city. A U.S.-
arranged peace agreement led to
most PLO members leaving the
city by sea, but Sharon was deter-
mined to get rid of all of them.
After announcing a sweep of
refugee camps, Lebanese presi-
dent — and Christian leader —
Bashir Gemayel was assassinated.
In response, Israeli-backed Pha-
langists massacred more than 300
people in two of the camps.
Israel's leaders, after an Israeli
commission of inquiry, were
indirectly blamed.
Aftermath:
Three months later, with Israeli
troops apparently not leaving
Lebanon, more than 400,000
Israelis turned out to protest the
unending war. Within a year,
Prime Minister Begin had
resigned . The 1984 elections led
to a coalition government
between Labor and Likud. Six-
teen years later, Israelis still
debate how to extricate them-
selves from "Israel's Vietnam."
