Since then, the Arab countries and Palestinian guerrillas had stepped up terrorist attacks, drawing more military support from the Soviets and finances from oil-rich Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Egypt's new leader, Anwar el-Sadat, was determined to erase the shame and regain the Sinai. Israeli intelligence warned of a pending attack; Israel's leaders didn't listen and the United States constrained its new ally from launching a pre-emptive strikes. • „ . . . . . . f you will it, it is not a dream" Theodore Herzl Con re ation Shaa.rev Zedek Congregation Shaarey Zedek 27375 Bell Road Southfield, MI 48034 (248) 357-5544 CSZ-B'nai Israel Center 4200Walnut Lake Road West Bloomfield, MI 48323 (248) 681-4287 Eugene & Marcia Applebaum Jewish Parenting Center 4200 Walnut Lake Road West Bloomfield, MI 48323 (248) 681-5353 Irving & Beverly Laker Education &Youth Complex 2075 Walnut Lake Road West Bloomfield, MI 48323 (248) 549-4673 ► I VIVISER'S S DAT 11113311TING BETTY KATZMAN (FL.) Stunned Israel was caught prac- tically flat-footed, losing vital ground in the next few days. Three weeks later, after painful losses and brutal battles, Israel pushed back the invading Syrians and Egyp- tians. The cease-fire lines, however, were inconclusive, prompting the United States to play the role of peacemaker. Aftermath: The Arab-dominated Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) retaliated against the United States for its emergency air- lift support of Israel. Oil exports to America were cut off and petrole- um prices quadrupled. The world's economy spun in economic shock. U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger brokered settlements between Israel, Egypt, and Syria. An Israeli commission laid blame at the feet of the military com- mand, leading to Prime Minister Golda Meir's resignation in April 1974. Her successor, Yitzhak Rabin, was stung by an inflation- ary spiral. He and his Labor Party paid at the polls in 1977 as the Likud party, led by Menachem Begin, came to power for the first time in nearly three decades. WARS on page 96 C
