sublimated to all-dominating security
concerns. Economic, political, electoral,
social, and educational systems are
under some form of scrutiny and review.
In its quick assumption of adolescence,
Israel's national hormones are raging.
In its early years Israel was based on a
sense of community and consensus; now
it is balkanized by sectarian politics, spe-
cial interests, and a redefinition of
national identity. Vast social cleavages
between secular and religious Jews are
corroding Israel's national fiber, but so
far not tearing the society apart. And
still this question: If there is a Jewish
democracy, what role do Arabs play in
that environment?

Israeli And
American Jews
have emerged as
a symbiotic force
in Jewish history.

Once politically untouchable sacred
cows are open for attack; institutions
that established and nurtured the state
are undergoing reassessment. Issues once
not discussed openly are gripping Israeli
society. An emerging Israeli historiogra-
phy puts the blame of Palestinian
refugee creation squarely on the shoul-
ders of Zionist leaders. The press, once
restrained by security interests, now vili-
fies its politicians to a degree that would
make Sam Donaldson blush. Under
review, scrutiny, and redefinition are the
Histadrut Labor Federation, the vaunted
Israeli Defense Forces, its intelligence
organizations, and the role of religion in
society.
Meanwhile, both in Israel and the
United States, the majority of Jews are
ethnically identified, but not religiously
practicing. Here, materialism, con-
sumerism, individualism, and intermar-
riage are more prevalent than kashrut,
kiddush, and kehilah (community).
Fifty years after Israel's establishment,
Jewish identity is no longer defined by
our enemies. There is no Holocaust
lurking around the corner. We are no
longer a wandering people. Existential
fears still abound, but the threat to
Jewish physical survival has abated.
Can we, a post-emancipation people,
avoid unraveling? The onus belongs to
everyone of us. We earned it.
