Abe Pasternak of Southfield was named
a United Way Community Services
Heart of Gold winner for his Sinai Hos-
pital Guild volunteer work.
A Sinai volunteer since 1994, he vis-
its patients, answers questions and helps
resolve patient concerns. "His willing-
ness to listen along with his ability to
understand and be sensitive to the
needs of others is a tribute to his gentle
demeanor," reads the nominating letter
from the Sinai Hospital Guild, of which
he is a board member.
Pasternak makes it a point to visit
Russian immigrants because he under-
stands from his own life experience
what it's like to be in a new country
away from family.
A survivor of the Buchenwald and
Auschwitz death camps, where he lost
his parents and two brothers, Pasternak
came to the United States in 1947. The
nextyear, he was drafted into the Army.
His studies in theology prepared him to
be an acting Army chaplain.

During the 1970s, Pasternak became
a volunteer at the Holocaust Memorial
Center in West Bloomfield. "His dedi-
cation and commitment has not only
helped raise funding for the center but
also has
raised aware-
ness for this
very painful
time in histo-
ry," reads the
nominating
letter.
For more
than 20 years,
he has spoken
to college,

groups about
the horrors
and lessons of the Holocaust. A recipi-
ent of the David Ben-Gurion Award in
1975, Pasternak is on the executive
board and the board of directors of the
Holocaust Memorial Center.
"You learn that in five minutes, your
life could change and ,you could disap-
pear," he said. "I was fortunate God
gave me my life and my health. It is my
obligation as a human being to help
others. It is my reward. Whether rich or
poor, or sick, you have to help." Paster-
nak also volunteers for the National
Council of Jewish Women/Kosher
Meals on Wheels.
He was honored along with other
award winners at a luncheon April 21 at
Detroit's Cobo Center. The event was
held during National Volunteer Week.
