need of properly designed programs,
competently administered, that can
provide a transformative experience
for these young people . .. These
programs need to be more creative
and daring if we really want to
attract those who need it the most,
namely, the currently unaffiliated
youth."
In short, he's saying we need to
supplement the excellent post-Israel-
experience programs already offered
by the Agency for Jewish Education
and the synagogues.
Enter the Michigan/Israel Con-
nection's newly formed Come
Back/Give Back committee. It's
charged with keeping Teen Mission
2 returnees drawn to Jewish tradition
and
involved
in Jewish
life.
"We
need to
keep kids
connected
so they
continue
to give
back to
the Jewish
communi-
ty — so
we keep
that living Steven Schanes
bridge,"
said Steven Schanes, Come
Back/Give Back co-chair with Lori
Garon. "To me, an Israel experience
without a post-Israel experience is
wasted."
Committee ideas include having
Teen Mission 2 returnees dialogue
with local Arab-American teens, visit
the national Holocaust museum in
Washington, perform communal vol-
unteer work and team up with a
Federation Young Adult Division
mentor. "I'd also like to partner with
our kids in developing programming
for what I'll call a teen tapestry — a
full day of learning at the JCC,"
Schanes said.
As editor of The Jewish News, it's
my fervent hope Israel Album con-
tributes to the nurturing that's so
essential to convincing teenagers that
Jewish identity is important and
Eretz Yisrael is special.
