placed in a rough, tough regiment of
southern mountaineers. From the
very beginning, he is exposed to a
flood of anti-Semitic epithets. Finally,
he can endure it no longer and chal-
lenges 10 of the biggest bullies in the
regiment to personal fistic combat.
He is not a trained fighter, but he
fought all 10 of them and is almost
killed in the process. Immediately,
the attitude of the men in the regi-
ment changes and they begin to
respect him. In fact, they begin to
admire him. To me, that story is
depressing. Was it worthy of admira-
tion — the fact he could have his
face bloodied and his ribs cracked?
Was there nothing else for which they
could admire him — the fact that he
was cultured, sensitive, idealistic?
The same is true of Israel. If the
world had wanted to admire the peo-
ple of Israel, they could have admired
it 50, 60 years ago when Jews from all
parts of the world went there for the
sake of an ideal. Young Jewish men
and women came to one of the most
neglected and barren parts of the
world and built it up without govern-
ment subsidies but by their persis-
tence, by the sweat of their brows.
During World War II, they went into
the heart of Nazi Europe to rescue
their brethren through the under-
ground. They drowned in un-seawor-
thy boats. Now, that was worthy of
admiration. Did the world have to
wait until the Jews could kill Arabs
before the world would admire them?
That's why the constant praise of
Israel is so depressing; it reveals the
fact the we live in a world that
admires the unsheathed sword and the
iron fist. No, that is not my hope for
Israel. I do not hope that Israel will
become a powerful military nation.
My hope for Israel is that it will take
its place in the family of cultured
nations, that it will do the American
job of spreading democracy in the
Near East.
As we celebrate the 50th anniver-
sary of the State of Israel, it is my
hope that Israel and the Arab lands
will learn to live together; that the
bloodstained borders of the Near East
will become blessed bridges of cooper-
ation; that the sword of Israel that has
been triumphant will see its greatest
triumph — it will be the first sword to
be beaten into a plowshare; and Israel,
though born in the stress of war, will
be the first in troubled Asia to estab-
lish the blessed habit of international
peace.
