Israelis in Ann Arbor
have found a sense of community
among their compatriots.

or Ilana Gafni, April 30 was
a bittersweet day, made
doubly so because as a
native Israeli living in Ann
Arbor, she was some 6,000 miles from
the heart of her homeland's 50th
anniversary party.
Gafni, who used to head a now
defunct home-away-from-home group
called Israeli Students and Scholars, said
that American Jews simply do not know
how to celebrate the way Israelis do.
"It's a very important day for me,"
said Gafni, a computer software devel-
oper who is also an avid Israeli dancer.
"When the Israelis in town were orga-
nized, this used to be a very touching

day. The day before Independence
Day is Memorial Day (Yom
Hazikaron) — in Israel everybody
knows people who gave their lives to
the state, or who got wounded in a
very bad way," she said.
So in the past, when the expatriate
Israelis here commemorated Indepen-
dence Day, there was an inseparable
element of mourning to salt the joy.
"Independence Day is really a com-
bination of happiness and sadness at
the same time," Gafni said. "I miss
that part, because when the American
Jewish community organizes [Israel's
birthday], they don't like to include
that memorial service. I'm not sure
why, but that part I miss.
"But," she added, "I will celebrate it
the way it's done here because I can't cel-
