maintain the State of Israel and to
make sure that it's secure."
Rochlin gravitated to AST 25 years
ago, after taking a mission trip to the
Technion. He went on to become a
member of the national board and
currently serves as president of the
Detroit chapter. "What's happening
now is an influx of younger people.
C-/ \
That's the exciting thing," said
Rochlin, whose son, Michael Egren, is
active with AST. "I project that the
chapter will be more visible within the
community. People want to be on a
winning team."
This year, attorney Lawrence Jacki-
er of West Bloomfield became the first
to represent the Detroit chapter as
president of the National ATS.
For Jackier, the position is a means
of carrying on the legacy of his father,
Joseph, who served on the national
board and chaired the audit commit-
tee.
"It was my father's favorite Jewish
organization," said Jackier. "There has
always been a high quality, dedicated
core group of Technion supporters.
But there has not been the intergener-
ational transfer of loyalty that our
leadership would like to have seen
occur. That's what I plan to do as
president — develop a program that
addresses that."
In October, the national board will
hold its meeting in Detroit in honor
of William Davidson, who con-
tributed $30 million to create a busi-
ness management schocil at Technion
critical to Israel's economic success.
Through the years, $650 million
has been raised for Technion by the
AST, which boasts 20,000 supporters
and 16 satellite offices around the
country. The 1997-99 national cam-
paign to raise $175 million, now at its
midpoint, has drawn $101 million,
$31 million of which was collected
here.
"I've always been a Reform Zionist
and always been involved either as a
professional or as a volunteer in fund
raising for the State of Israel. I also
always followed the Technion," said
Gad-Harf, who left an eight-year posi-
tion as director of programming and
development at Temple Israel in West
Bloomfield. "This was a very exciting
way for me to develop stronger ties
with Israel.
"The future of Israel is high-tech,
and the future of high-tech is the
Technion," added Gad-Harf. "When
economic times are good, there is
greater chance for peace. 111
