They have stood since the sultan in
Constantinople built them in the
1500s. We took the stairway up just
inside the Damascus Gate and ate
falafel on the top roof of the Gate.
What a place for people-watching! You
can choose to walk for only a short
while or walk the entire 2 1/2 miles.
The ramparts walkway has
handrails where needed. You can stand
where the defenders of the city stood,
peering out where they fired their
weapons.
The ramparts walk is also a unique
way to see the neighborhoods inside
the Old City. We saw courtyards
where children played and their par-
ents tended gardens, hung out laundry
to dry or visited with each other.

Larry and Gladys Rockind of West
Bloomfield report on three spots they
love to visit in Israel. An awesome
place to stop at the edge of the desert
is the nationalpark containing the
burial site of David Ben-Gurion and
his wife.
Located just south of Sde Boker,
the kibbutz he lived in after he left the
government, the spot beautifully land-
scaped using natural desert materials,
overlooks one of the most spellbinding
and awesome natural areas of Israel:
the Valley of Zin.
Visiting the graves on the evenirig
of Yom Hazikaron, we watched the
lowering of the Israeli flag to half-staff
-and heard the blowing of Taps, as we
watched the sun setting over the awe-
some, spell-binding vista of the
canyon below.
The canyon's beauty is even better
appreciated with a follow-up visit dur-
ing the day, along with a hike through
the canyon. The hiking isn't too diffi-
cult and there are usually many groups
of Israelis on organized tours or
groups of school children hiking with
their teachers and guards. The Bible
comes to life in the canyon and the
area provides a spiritual feeling.
Much has been written about Ben-
Yehudah Street in Jerusalem with its
shops, cafes and crowds, but our
favorite people-watching spot is
Nachalat Sheva nearby, off Kikar
Tsion. The street and its adjoining
side streets are closed to traffic, but
the scale of the buildings and the nar-.
rowness of the street give the quarter a
special Old World ambience.
Much of the street is devoted to
galleries of Israeli crafts, particularly
pottery. There are sidewalk cafes sell-
ing Mexican, Italian, Israeli and
