Gerald S. Cook reported on Belvoir, a
Crusader fortress in ruins located
south of Tiberias. It is known in
Hebrew as Kochav Hayarden, the star
of the Jordan. The name "Belvoir"
refers to the beautiful view.
On the narrow, winding road up
the mountain, only the passengers
could enjoy the view; the driver had
to concentrate on the road!
From the fortress at the top, we
could all see a huge portion of the
Galilee and also beyond the Jordan
River into the country named Jordan.
Belvoir's high position, overlooking
important routes, explains why the
Crusaders built the fortress when they
arrived in 1099 from Europe to con-
quer the land from the Muslims for
Christendom (How many Jewish
/) martyrs they killed on the way!). Less
than 100 years later, Saladdin's armies
besieged Belvoir for 18 months before
they could capture it from the Cru-
saders.
In Israel's War for Independence in
1948, Israeli troops arrived on
Belvoir's strategic heights just one day
before the Iraqis crossed the Jordan.
) Today, black stone walls, turrets, arch-
es, domed ceilings and wide moats
still stand, 900 years after they were
built. What a playground for Barbara
and me and our three children — we
had the entire fortress to ourselves!
