PRESIDENT government agency, oversees the creation of official Hebrew words to describe the flood of new ideas. Much as English speakers have done in borrowing roots from Latin and Greek, the academy looks into Hebrew to find root words, and then uses the structure of the lan- guage to coin a new word. However, notes Fine, the academy's stancinrds are sometimes ignored. "In fact," he says, "itc: \ is chic to use Hebraicized foreign words, preferably English ones, over perfectly good Hebrew ones." Hebrew's problems today are primari- ly technical, says Kraus. "Hebrew is a virtual nightmare for the printer, and with computers it is a virtual virtual nightmare," he notes puckishly. "Since Hebrew is written right to left, it can require typing in Hebrew backwards and can render the wrap-around feature exceedingly problematic." There have been proposals to solve these problems, including Romanizing Hebrew, but they haven't caught on. The computer, however, might also prove a salvation. "Extensive technology has been developed for Hebrew word- processing and accessing Hebrew sites on the Internet," says Kraus. That will add yet another chapter to the book of this enduring, and ever- changing, language. ❑ Israel: 1948 To Present 1948—The War of Independence; the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem falls to Jordan's Arab Legion 1967—Six-Day War; Jerusalem reunited 1973—Yom Kippur War 1977—Anwar Sadat travels to Jerusalem 1978—Camp David Accords 1979—Israel-Egypt peace treaty 1991—Gulf War leads to Madrid Peace Conference 1993—Israel-PLO Declaration of Principles 1994—Israel-PLO peace treaty 1995—Israel-PLO Interim Agreement; assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin 1997—Israel-PLO Hebron Protocol Source: Kidsnet 1997
