for a one-year sabbatical.

replace Dr. Helene Cohen, who will
be scaling back her hours next year.

Smiley, a Hillel administrator since
1987, will remain at Hillel until mid-
October, then leave for Jerusalem with
his wife, Aviva Silverman, and their
two children. In Israel, Smiley will
study at the rabbinical school of the
Beit Midrash of the Jewish Theologi-
cal Seminary, work part
time at the Hebrew
University's Melton
Research Centre for
Diaspora Education and
participate in Jerusalem
Fellows-sponsored pro-
jects concerning Jewish
day schools.
"This is not uncom-
mon," said Smiley of
the sabbatical. He said it
is part of his employ-
ment agreement with
Hillel, although he
declined to say if he will
be paid by the school
during his leave.

declined to say whether
Smiley's sabbatical
would be a paid leave.
"Sabbaticals have
become part of the job
of senior day school
leaders in the country,"
said Smiley. "This is one
of the opportunities for
professional growth and
renewal. It helps one
