pointed and he began collecting all of
his packages. I went through my mental
checklist — who was where, what
errands still needed to be taken care of,
would the kids be locked out of the
house? I told Mr. Fishman that I would
drive him to the bus stop. He thanked
me profusely and we loaded my car
with his packages.
On the way to the bus, Mr. Fishman
turned to me and said, "I have a ques-
tion for you. It's a thought-provoking
question .. one that I ask a lot of peo-
ple." My interest was piqued and I was
ready. "If you could choose to do one of
the five following things, which would
you choose?" he asked.
"One — have a conversation with
God; two — walk on the moon; three
— walk on the floor of the ocean; four
— read tomorrow's newspaper cover to
cover; five — watch a video of your
parents on the day of your birth."
Mr. Fishman didn't realize it but he
had hit a nerve. I had been spending
the last year reading, studying, ques-
tioning my beliefs and thinking about
my relationship with God. I eagerly
responded, "Mr. Fishman, you don't
know me; but this is a no-brainer for
me. I would definitely choose the
chance to speak with God."
Mr. Fishman acknowledged that
most people give that response, but that
would not be his choice. With great
enthusiasm, he told me that he would
choose to view the video of his parents
on the day he was born. 'What could _
be greater than bringing your child into
the world?" he said. "I can't imagine any
joy and happiness greater than that," he
emphasized. Having three children of
my own, I agreed with him that it is
truly very special and incomparable to
anything else.
We arrived at the bus stop and he
began taking his boxes of food out of
my car. "How will you manage all of
these packages?" I asked, feeling guilty
that my mental checklist precluded me
from driving him all the way home. He
told me not to worry, he'd be fine.
He thanked me over and over again
for bringing him to the bus and wished
me a good holiday. After a final thank
you, we shook hands. He had a very
strong and powerful grip. He looked
me in the eye and said, "I wish you all
good blessings."
I watched Mr. Fishman leave my
car, this enigmatic man of strength
and grace. Different emotions flooded
my brain. I sat in my car, a little dazed
and bewildered, still feeling the impact
of his hand in mine and wondering
if, maybe, I had experienced my
,) choice. 0
