INTRODUCING...

culated that members of the Clinton
administration feel their role in the
peace process is "hopeless."
"What we are trying to do is
encourage the administration to keep
going because of the importance of
the United States in achieving peace,
and to do it privately in terms of dis-
closure of details," Levin said. He sent
the letter to Albright in hopes of get-
ting a commitment on both counts.
Albright's response, Levin noted,
shows she is listening.
In that letter, the Secretary of State
said the United States is determined to
pursue negotiations in the Middle
East, privately, and to do what it takes
to break the impasse between the
Israelis and Palestinians.

explained that the senator did sign
Levin's letter because he "agreed" with
it.
"What you see in the Levin letter is
the same as what you see in the
Lieberman letter. Senator Lieberman's
comments express support of what the
administration is doing. He was dis-
tressed at the possibility of what tac-
tics [the administration] would
employ to achieve its ends," said Jim
Gray.
Sen. Spencer Abraham, Michigan's
Republican senator, signed neither the
Levin nor the Mack-Lieberman letter.
But that doesn't mean he's not get-
ting into the act. His press secretary
said the senator has sharpened his
quill.
"Senator Abraham is sending his
own letter. He agreed with parts of the
Mack-Lieberman letter, but his posi-
tion is more focused on discouraging
the administration from attempting to
predetermine the outcome of the nego-
tiations. He thinks the U.S. role
should strictly be that of a facilitator of
the peace process and should not try to
impose solutions on the parties to the
peace process," said Dan Senor. ❑
