HONORING HEROINES

/—

Ella of Frel wants nothing more than
to be free of the fairy Lucinda's gift of
obedience and feel that she belongs to
herself For how can she truly belong
to herself if she knows that at any
time, anyone can order her to hop on
one foot, cut off her hand or betray
her kingdom — and she'll have to
obey?
Against a tapestry of princes, ogres,
giants, wicked stepsisters and fairy god-
mothers, Ella's account of her quest to
break the spell is a poignant tale about
an unforgettable heroine who is deter-

Ella sprung from the imagination
of first-time children's book author
Gail Carson Levine. Her Cinderella
story, titled Ella Enchanted, received
the 1998 Newbery Honor award and
established Levine as a talented and
witty story teller. Levine and her hus-
band, David, live in a vintage farm-
house in Brewster, N.Y., and recently
