"Five thousand people is the biggest crowd I've per- formed for. I'd perform for big audiences if there was one, and if it wasn't big, I'd perform for small audi- ences.'' Sosin now does at least one show per month for the residents at Fleischman Apartments, where he lives. "They are the greatest audience in the world because they are great critics," he said. "Even when '- they have nothing good to say about the show, they tell me what they think." Eight years ago, Sosin began interpreting for Russ- ian immigrants, and teaching classes in English to Russian Jews and gentiles. "The gentiles don't always get the gist of Jewish humor," he lamented, "but they try to understand." JOAVDAVD ANN RUBIN AL nn Rubin may have limited eyesight and hearing, but her memory is laser sharp. Born in New York City, Rubin moved to Detroit at the age of 19, when her mother decided to relocate. She worked first for attorneys, then for a coal company, until she started her family. Rubin married Peter Rubin in 1937. They have two children, Remey, who lives in Chicago, and Pamela, who resides in Farmington Hills. In 1957, Rubin joined the National Council of Jewish Women, beginning a lifelong career of committed volunteer- ing. She has held various lead- ership positions within NCJW and also helped to coordinate projects, including Kosher Meals On Wheels and the Up and Out programs for seniors. Rubin first hooked up with NCJW thanks to a call from the then-president. The two women did not know each other, but the president said, "We could use you, we'd like for you to get involved," Rubin recalled. She did, "and it's been 41 years. They do good work. We have tremen- dous projects. This organiza- tion is run by two paid secre- taries and that's it. "I think every volunteer should get an Oscar — they shouldn't have to wait until they're as old as me," said Rubin, who is 88. She has been a member of Adat Shalom Syna- gogue in Farmington Hills and is still active with its sisterhood. She says she belongs "to every Jewish organization. I'm what you call a paying member. I know I'm a Jew. That's all I can say — I'm Jewish." — Lynne Meredith Cohn t h elmumlw A ilk N ll eik‘oritood Center with • Attitude • Sty/ • Convenience • 40 S/iopi/Services ;)A RC O ciEBED WEST BLOOMFIELD • MICHIGAN Orchard Lake Road • North of Maple (248) 851-7727 4/24 1998
