got to talk to celebrities both in and
out of music." Those included the
Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa and 'All
In The Family" star Carroll
O'Connor.
"In 1991 I gave up on music alto-
gether and concentrated on talk," he
adds. 'A talk format is something that
no programming director would even
look at on an FM station. I gear
myself to a younger audience and ask
the tough questions."
Like talk radio icons Howard Stern
and Don Imus, Handelman's on-air
personality is reflective of his off-air
one.
"What people on the air hear is
100 percent me," he says. "I have no
schtick or bit or attitude, [but] I'm
not neutral."
Outside of personality, Handelman
considers himself different than Stern
and Imus in another important way.
"They're morning guys and I'm late
night," he says. "It's the same kind of
zaniness but a different kind of animal."
Religion was never very important
to Handelman, and "I never picked
my friends based on religion," he said.
"Organized religion as a whole seemed
to cause more problems than good
growing up. I don't care what people
are, and always wondered why people
cared.

Rock talk grew
L out of an
experiment.

"But now, I am' enjoying the com-
pany of my Jewish friends," said
Handelman. And since the death of
his father and stepmother, he's has
been considering attending one of
three Charlotte synagogues.
Since going to a talk format, he has
attacked politicians and televangelists.
"When I was in Raleigh [N.C.], I
went after Jim and Tammy Faye
Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart,"
Handelman boasts.
Meanwhile, Handelman remains
stationed in the South, where, he said,
his Judaism has never been a problem.
'Aside from [U.S. Sen.] Jesse Helms,
North Carolina is great," he says." ❑

Allan Handelman's syndicated
rock talk show airs 10 p.m.-12
midnight Sundays on WWBR
102.7FM.
