Tenth Annual Samuel M. Levin
Economics Award Lecture
Davis was raised Reform but rebelled
against her heritage. It was not until
she spent time in France and Germany
during college that she "completely
became" one with my culture.
"It's such a huge part of who I am.
Even in my film — you know that the
characters are Jewish, which you usu-
ally don't [see] in most movies."
Her next film also features strongly
Jewish characters.
Like the hit Fox comedy "Ally
McBeal," I Love You takes viewers into
the mind of its lead female, often
showing wild scenes that act our
Katie's fantasies.
But Davis is annoyed with the
comparison. After all, her film was
completed almost two years ago and
sat on a shelf while "Ally McBeal"
debuted last fall.

A film for men
and women.
"This is how women think; we
think in fantasies," says Davis. "Then
the show comes out before my film is
released. It's hard for me. I love that
show; I just wish [my film] came out
first. [`Ally McBeal"] kind of took
away that original angle from it."
There have been independent films
in recent years ( The Brothers
McMullen, Swingers) that have won
acclaim for looking at the romantic
lives of twentysomething men, but
few have tried the female perspective
... until now.
"Women today are more confused
than they've ever been," says Davis.
We have so much sexual freedom
that sometimes we make choices just
because we can make them — not
because we want to."
Still, she hopes the film will appeal
to more than just Gen-X viewers.
"It was really important to me that
it appeal to men as well as women. I
didn't set out to make a women's
movie. I wanted to make a movie
about a woman for men and women."
But victory is certainly sweet.
"I waited for so long," says Davis.
It's been very hard to have to wait for
so long, but it feels great. That's why I
made it — to have it out there, have
people see it. It's really a dream come
"
true. Li
