During World War II, Reform, Con-
servative and Orthodox rabbinic
groups all supported the formation
of the national Jewish Welfare
Board (JWB), which had among its
responsibilities finding Jewish clergy
TO serve with the American armed
forces. More than 1,000 men
responded to the JWB's request,
311 of whom eventually were
recruited. These included 267 in
the Army, 43 in the Navy and one
in the U.S. Maritime service. Later
during the war, the JWB helped
with USO programs in the United
States and abroad, hosted hospitali-
ty centers, and mailed religious
objects to Jewish soldiers fighting in
the war. These included kosner
food, 900,000 boxes of matzah
for Pesach, and more than 1.5 mil-
lion copies of the Torah.

petes in the pool, but he still leads

FYI: Mark Spitz wasn't the
first...
He was the biggest news in swim-
ming since Esther Williams and all
those lithe young women who regu-
larly united in flower formation. Mark
Spitz won seven gold medals in
swimming in 1972, marking the
greatest number of gold medals
received by an individual in Olympic
history. But did you know that Spitz,
who in 1968-won a silver and
bronze medal, was hardly the first
Jewish swimming star? In fact, at the
first modern-day Olympics, held in
Athens in 1896, Jewish swimmers
were the inarguable champs in the

FYI: What price, liberty?
No doubt you have heard of Emma
Lazarus, whose poem "The New

of Liberty. (By the way: there's a lot

Lazarus sold rights to the work in
1883? She earned $1,500, which
she promptly donated to a fund to
complete a pedestal for the famous
statue. ❑
